Sesamae Isabel
We here at Mastering Progress love everything to do with Mental Health Advocacy so ofcourse we had to share the story of Sesamae Isabel a powerful advocate in herself!
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your work?
Hey I'm Sesamae, I love movies, music, spending time with my family and traveling. Wow sounds like a dating profile (insert laugh here.) I'm a freelancer who works hard to bring awareness to Mental health in my work and writing. When I was 13 I started a charity event call Santa's little helpers that ran till 2019. When I was 16 I started an organization called She of Strength that focused on empowering young women by shinning light on powerful women. That ran till 2020. From the age of 16 I have been a professional speaker on Young Women's mental health. Speaking at conferences, panels, seminars, and conventions. I have been working in the film industry since I was 15 years old. Acting and working behind the scenes. My goal is too continue in that industry and making mental health a common theme in my work.
What is your biggest passion in life and how do you incorporate this into your work?
My biggest passions in life are Mental health advocacy, young women's advocacy and Film making. As freelancer I love to work for projects I feel cover my passions. Weather it is working on a short film written and directed by women, to working on film highlighting mental health. I have been privileged to have worked on some amazing projects that do so. At age 16 I worked on a short that was an all female crew. That's when I knew this was passion. I hope further in my career to direct and write films that draw light to the struggles of mental health especially as a young women. Use a platform to inform.
How do you take care of your mental and physical health?
I was diagnosed with Depression, Severe anxiety, PTSD at 15 years old and recently diagnosed with a panic disorder. All though I have grown and learned a lot about how to handle it I still learn everyday. It's a struggle. I go to therapy every other week. I believe everyone should see a therapist. I know unfortunately that not all can and that I have the privilege to be able to.
How do you keep yourself organized as a person who wears many hats in their life?
Let me tell you, I wish I was. I have the attention span of a 4 year old. With a creative mind I'm always thinking and getting distracted. It takes a lot of reminders to stay focused.
What are some things you think are important for people in their early twenty's to learn?
To stop people pleasing! Live for yourself, find yourself. It's totally okay to be "selfish" in your 20s.
What do you define success and prosperity as in your life?
If one day my work touches people's lives in some why I would feel as though I was successful.
What legacy do you want to leave behind?
I just want to life easier for whoever comes after mine. In anyway I can.
What is your greatest accomplishment to date?
When I was 16 years old I was the recipient of The YWCA Women of Distinction award. At the time I was youngest to receive this award. I had made a speech at the event pointing out there was little young women in the room. The following year the YWCA started "The Legacy Scholarship" in my honor to get more young women involved and at the event. So that they could feel empowered and be connected with powerful women.
