Marissa Szabo
I worked with Marissa a few years ago in the restaurant industry and we have been able to keep in touch through the powers of social media. Now she has started her own physical health business and I am so excited to share more about it and her story!
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your work?
I am a certified nutrition coach, certified health coach, and fitness instructor and I own a business called Well & Simple. I provide individual nutrition coaching services as well as corporate wellness programming.
What is your biggest passion in life and how do you incorporate this into your work?
I am dedicated to taking an anti-diet, size-inclusive approach to nutrition coaching. Having done diets, developed disordered eating habits because of them, and spent much of my life hating my body, it's critical to me that I help my clients avoid experiencing that. I help them transform their relationship with food so that it's no longer a source of stress and anxiety and they can nourish themselves and find the balance that works best for them. I also work to help them see how amazing their bodies are regardless of their size of shape.
How do you take care of your mental and physical health?
Intentional movement is very important in my stress management, whether it's lifting weights or running. I also make it a point to get outside as much as I can every day. Boundaries are also very important for my mental health so I make sure not to overbook myself and take time for rest.
How do you keep yourself organized as a person who wears many hats in their life?
I wish I could say I have a system for this but I don't! I'm a chronic list maker and if it isn't on my Google calendar, it doesn't exist. That's about it!
What are some things you think are important for people in their early twenty's to learn?
In your early 20s it's important to learn how to say "no" and to figure out your boundaries and enforce them, especially in work life. Once those boundaries are violated, it's so hard to re-establish them. I think it's also important to learn and accept that we are supposed to come in different shapes and sizes and it's detrimental to our mental and physical health to try to force our bodies to fit into a mold they were ever meant to fit.
What do you define success and prosperity as in your life?
Financial prosperity is lovely but, to me, it's not worth it if I'm miserable. So, to me, success and prosperity have to include feeling fulfilled and happy with what I'm doing.
Are there any decisions you regret making in your life?
I regret never having taken my semester abroad in college. I was just so shy back then and in hindsight I think I really missed out on an important experience/opportunity. I still have yet to travel outside the US!
What is your greatest accomplishment to date?
Starting my business. If you had asked me 10 years ago if I would ever do that, I would have said no way, that I didn't have what it takes. Here I am now 5 years in business! It took a lot of pushing through fear and discomfort, problem solving, and overcoming challenges, but it's been so worth it.
What characteristics/traits do you pride yourself the most for having?
I would say my sense of humor and my ability to think outside the box to find solutions.
